Article by Eric H.

As lifelong New Englanders with limited time for that "special getaway," we expect only the best when it comes to staying at a unqiue and romantic New England hotel.  After all, time is precious and it's essential to get your money's worth in these troubled economic times. That means we always look for a unique lodging destination with character and a great location.  This is not an easy task, as we, and many of our friends, have been duped and deceived by slick advertisements and establishments simply resting on their laurels (or hardys).  The following is a list of unqiue and romantic hotels (leading to reviews) that we have found to be excellent in quality and places we always look forward to returning to:

Katahdin Inn, York Beach, Maine -- Romantic 19th Century Victorian with stunning views of the ocean at Short Sands Beach.

Inn at Tanglewood Hall, York Harbor, Maine -- A relaxing retreat off the beaten path. Stunning, secluded old home with beautiful rooms and outside gardens, and close to the ocean.

The Inn at Woodstock Hill, Woodstock, CT -- Nestled in the "Quiet Corner" of Connecticut, the Inn at Woodstock Hill is a charming 1816 inn in an unspoiled region with big old homes, a classic village green and gentle rolling hills.  This is a perfect lodging getaway.

Foxfire Inn and Italian Restaurant, Stowe, VT -- What you would expect a quaint New England inn to look like.  Also has a wonderful Italian restaurant!

The Inn at Long Sands, York Beach, Maine -- Splendid views of Long Sands Beach and individually decorated rooms make the Inn at Long Sands a wonderful coastal lodging getaway destination.

Kimball Terrace Inn, Northeast Harbor, Maine -- A well-run, clean motel that benefits from scenic landscaping and habor views in the Acadia National Park region. As romantic as a motel can get!

Smugglers' Notch Resort, Jeffersonville, VT -- Generally regarded as one of America's great family resorts, Smugglers' Notch doesn't disappoint with its condo/village setting and plenty of scenery, and recreational activites in the appealing, beautiful and mountainous Stowe/Jeffersonville region. It's also a wonderful romantic getaway, given the natural setting and inherent romantic feel of Vermont.

Spotlight on unique and romantic lodging in York, Maine

The York, Maine, area, represents coastal New England at its best with areas of both relaxation and lively attractions, wonderful oceanfront restaurants with Maine lobster, stunning scenery including Nubble Lighthouse and the sea, and some unbeatable stretches of Maine beach. It's a friendly place that embodies the spirit of a small New England town yet it welcomes tourists to experience a great New England vacation. It is our recommendation as a top travel destination in New England, a place that we can't get enough, any time of year.

Edwards' Harborside Inn, York Harbor, Maine

Edwards' Harborside Inn at York Harbor is a charming place with refreshing sun-splashed views of the ocean. Many of the rooms are spacious and full of character, and the sweet coastal breeze whisks away past stresses of the week. Edward's is located where York Harbor meets the Atlantic Ocean and is within walking distance of the village shops. The shopping district has a quaint, relaxed feel with its tree-lined side streets, spectacular homes sporting many different types of architecture, and meandering sidewalks leading to charming little independently owned shops. A small ocean beach -- a stone's throw away from Edwards' -- is a great convenience, as well as a fun cliff walk which requires walking over lots of rocks, while enjoying sweeping views of the Atlantic ocean. Edwards' is especially lovely in autumn when the crowds lessen, the foliage debuts, and the slight chill in the air has a special feel. Walking the dock at Edwards' backyard or having breakfast outdoors with fine views of the harbor creates one of the most delightful experiences in New England lodging -- it's like making your own great discovery. Docksider Guest Quarters and Restaurant, York Harbor, Maine -- The Dockside Guest Quarters has a distinct advantage over other area lodging establishments. This special place with cottage lodging and a wraparound porch and additional upscale motel rooms with balconies offers a secluded wooded location on Harris Island that paves the way to unobstructed and unspoiled views of York Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean. This peace and relaxation are not always apparent in other areas of York where moderate to extreme hustle and bustle may not be everyone's cup of tea -- although, for us, the live wire ocean stretches of beach with great walks, dining and myriad attractions are one of the travel highlights in New England. In the case of Dockside Guest Quarters, however, you get the best of both worlds. You are off the beaten path for total peace and quiet, but just a short drive to where to action is in York Beach. Add an upscale, but causal restaurant with water views (and some wonderful seafood dishes), and you have a total package perfect for a romantic getaway for married couples, an ideal location for a wedding ceremony, a family vacation or corporate meeting. Unique and romantic lodging destination
