Spotlight on Newport, Rhode Island
by Eric H., VisitingNewEngland.com (article posted on Dec. 12, 2007)
Newport,
RI, is famous for its mansions, but it also houses many other
incredible attractions. There are clean, fun ocean beaches like Easton's,
the Cliff Walk along the ocean, the International Tennis Hall of Fame,
local shopping at colorful Bannister's Wharf and Brick Market Place,
Fort Adams State Park (a great place to kite fly), sailing and fishing
charters, the Newport Art Museum and Art Association, and the Museum of
Newport History. Newport also features one of the best ocean
drives in New England, appropriately located on Ocean Drive. Newport is
a great place to walk -- the narrow, old sea captains streets, the beaches, in and around the mansions,
and the more modern shopping areas. It also has, virtually, hundreds of
area hotel and restaurants. Newport is also famous for its summer
musical festivals.

Newport Pros: The
mansion tours, access to great public beaches, scenic ocean views,
first-class hotels and restaurants, myriad downtown shopping
opportunities. I particularly like going to Newport to enjoy Easton's
Beach, with its great stretch of sand, a carousel and a small but
fascinating branch of the New England Aquarium. The Brick Alley Pub is
a great informal downtown place to grab a burger, or fine steak,
chicken and seafood dishes. Newport is also within
one hour of other great New England destinations like Providence, RI,
the beginning of Cape Cod, and Mystic, CT.
Newport Cons: Congested
streets in the summer, too many trendy, overpriced shops, a few
restaurants that like to charge 15 bucks for a hamburger.
