Camp Medomak offers fun
for the whole family (Posted 4/25/01)
I wanted to share with you
an essay my daughter wrote recently. Let me begin with the premise
that Medomak is a camp for families (Yes, Mom, Dad and Granny
included). The summer of 2000 we decided to go with some friends.
I was a little reluctant, as I am not the "camping type"
but the rest of the family was so "gung ho," I agreed.
My favorite aspect of camp
was that I would not have to shop, cook or clean up the entire
week. The food was delicious and hearty (there's even lobster
night). Plenty of "adult" activities were
provided. For example, Maine beer and cheese tasting, fly fishing,
photography, and a masseuse on staff. There was never any pressure
to join in and a few mornings an Adirodack chair and a good book
won out. We never had to worry about the kids the entire
week (the ratio of counselors to kids was high) and believe it
or not there was not one sibling fight the entire time we were
there.
Every Wednesday is "out
of camp" day. Medomak provided breakfast and the opportunity
to pack a bag lunch. Most families took the day to sight
see Acadia National Park, Portland, Camden, Monheghan Island
(Maine)... Our family choose to spend the day at camp and enjoy
the lake to ourselves. That night we shared a meal with
the abbreviated staff.
About a week after our return
home I asked my three kids which vacation they enjoyed more,
our week at Disney (Oct.1999) or the week we spent at Medomak.
Without hesitation all three shouted Medomak (and it was a fraction
of the price)!

Camp Medomak : the "best
time my family ever had"
by Kaitlin (Kate) S.
Age: 11
The best time my family ever
had was last summer in Washington Maine. We went to a camp for
families named Camp Medomak. It was a blast! All the families
arrived on a Sunday and were taken on a hike to see the entire
camp. We went to the lake, beaver dam, and sunset lodge and ended
up on blueberry hill for a beautiful sunset. That night about
fifty of us picked enough blueberries to eat blueberry pancakes,
muffins and cobbler for three days.
The entire week we would
wake up, eat a delicious breakfast and head off to our morning
activities. We had plenty of fun to choose from. We could go
on hikes, go to arts and crafts, join in dance or gymnastics,
try our hand at archery, photography, fly fishing, tennis, basketball
or Frisbee golf.
My favorite activities came
after lunch. That's when the lake was open. We could go swimming,
canoeing, kayaking, fishing or sailing. Every afternoon there
was an activity lakeside. One day we made candles in the sand.
The next day we made newspaper hats. My favorite was the day
we had a sandcastle contest. Everyone won! I loved swimming out
to the floating dock to dive off the diving board. I would always
keep my eye peeled for the loons. I learned that a loon can hold
its breath and swim under water for fifteen minutes.
Every night there was a campfire.
We would watch for shooting stars, pointout constellations, sing
songs, tell jokes, perform skits and share our favorite moments
of the day with our family and friends. And there was plenty
of wildlife. One night we found a porcupine. Another night, Kawanda,
the camp dog, found a skunk or perhaps I should say the skunk
found her! Every night the loons would sing us to sleep with
their lullabies.
At the end of the week I
realized that I never missed my favorite television shows, video
games or my computer. I enjoyed sharing a special activity with
everyone in my family. Mom and I took the photography class and
learned how to develop our own film. My brother, Sean, was a
good sport and joined in the swing dancing class when we needed
male partners. My sister, Clare, and I kayaked together and laughed
ourselves silly when we could only go in circles. My Dad was
great at fishing and always offered to take us out on the lake
with him. The last night at Medomak at the final campfire my
family got up and sang a crazy song we had written to the tune
of The Beverly Hillbillies. That week was magical and one I'll
never forget sharing with my family.
