The Discovery Museums Encourage the Wonderment of Educational Discovery ![]() Article and photos by Eric H. ACTON, MA, New England USA -- The Discovery Museums, of Acton, Mass., encourages little minds to think big. A 120-year-old Victorian house sets a charming tone for the Children's Discovery Museum, which offers 10 hands-on exhibits for toddlers and preschool children. The more modern Science Discovery Museum is the bigger draw with three floors of seemingly endless interactive exhibits for school age children. A tornado funnel simulator provides lots of fun for children who generate the funnel by walking in a circle. An inventor's workshop promotes the art and science of carpentry. An arts and crafts room offers lots of paper, glue and "doo-dads" for children to create their masterpieces. The "Sea of Clouds," is a fog generator that allows for creating disturbances that develop into complex convection currents and flow systems. Perhaps the most fun is a small second floor dark room where a child's shadow can be frozen by the click of a flashlight. With hundreds of more learning possibilities through the exhibits and various events and programs, the Discovery Museums go where very few tourist attractions have gone before: by making learning fun and knowing that just one memory from a visit to this wonderful museum could be the impetus that creates the next great mind of the future.
