Falls weddings in New England

Why it's so easy to "fall" in love with an autumn wedding

by Lem Dunston

Having a wedding in New England is a great idea.  Having a wedding in New England during the fall season is an even greater idea.

With generally pleasing weather in September and early October, the chance to enjoy your special day in one of America's great regions is better, in our opinion, than in the spring and summer (forget about winter, unless you plan on having a ski-oriented wedding).  The spring is mercurial, sometimes acting like winter and sometimes like a mini monsoon with torrential rains. Summers can be very humid, unless you pick a spot by the ocean.  With fall,  however, you have the opportunity to enjoy the turning of the leaves (depending what time of Spetember and October and what location) during some of New England's best weather.

Let's face it, although it's generally known that talking about the weather is shallow conversation, the climate is an important part of your wedding day. It's really ideal to have a sunny day for your own sunny day!  Plus, you want the safest weather situation for your guests.  Although we cannot guarantee the weather in New England, fall seems to give us the best days.

So, imagine having your special day at a classic, New England white steeple church  at the town common. Colonial homes surround the "village green," and the leaves are turning color. It's really a great setting for a wedding.  Of course, there's nothing wrong with a coastal wedding, too, and New England has picture-perfect towns like Stonington Borough, CT, Kennebunkport, Maine, York Harbor, Maine, and Chatham, MA (Cape Cod) to make your wedding by the sea a special day.

Fall is also a wonderful time for a honeymoon in New England. The turning of the leaves in storied towns like Stowe, VT, Woodstock, VT,  Lenox, MA (the Berkshires), and North Conway, NH make for some of the most spectacular scenery you'll ever see.  The mountains with its fresh air, cool fall walks, town common festivals and delicious apple cider and cheddar cheese is the type of stuff that New England vacation dreams are made of -- no words can describe the special feeling.  You'll also find myriad chain and individually owned lodging in these classic New England towns to make your honeymoon even  that more special.

While you might not get the fall foliage colors by the New England copast, what you will get are less crowds, businesses that are generally still open and the chance to talk that proverbial walk on the beqach without "Joe Sick-Pack" blaring his boombox and sounding like a profane Fred Flintstone. It's a quieter time, perfect for your newly-formed grand union .  Plus, many oceanfront hotels offer off season rates!

We can't say enough good things about having a New England fall wedding. We had one 10  years ago and  will remember that special day in a special region each and every day.  We hope you can do the same by choosing the wonderful New England region for your fall wedding.
