"Hey, have you ever been to 'Bahhnancle Billy's'? They have the best "lobstahhh!"

Translated, that's "Barnacle Billy's" Restaurant and "lobster," stated in a thick Boston accent. Barnacle Billy's is located in Oguinquit, Maine, and is one of the many "household name" restaurants in New England. For one reason or another, certain restaurants in New England have taken on tourist attraction status. Whether made famous by a movie, by hard-work and longevity, or an offbeat gimmick, the following New England dining spots possess a true restaurant tourist destination status:

Barnacle Billy's, Ogunquit, Maine
A classic Maine waterfront restaurant in business for almost 50 years, Barnacle Billy's specializes in fresh maine lobster, steamed clams and New England clam chowder. Located at scenic Perkins Cove, the indoor and outdoor seating provide a relaxing, Down East atmosphere. People love their seafood and drinks here! Barnacle Billy's serves up some pretty tasty food, fortunately staying away from becoming an overrated tourist trap. It does get crowded though in the peak summer tourist season, so be prepared for a wait. Perkins Cove Rd., Ogunquit, Maine. Tel. 207-646-5575.

Maine Diner, Wells, Maine
With local and national celebrity and media endorsements, the Maine Diner bills itself as ""World famous food, like grandma used to make." That's an accurate enough slogan, given the homemade dishes like mac and cheese, chicken pot pie, egg salad, homemade soups, pies, New England Indian pudding, waffles and pancakes. The Maine Diner, however, goes well beyond grandma's home-cooked food, especially with the lobster selections: lobster mac and cheese, lobster pie, lobster salad, lobster roll, lobster club sandwich, lobster stew and lobster Benedict. The Maine Diner also makes a fabulous seafood chowder, excellent fried and broiled seafood dinners and Maine crab cakes. Yankee Magazine, Down East Magazine, Boston Globe, the NBC Today Show, Boston sports radio legend Eddie Andelman, Guy Fieri from the Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and many others have all spoken and written well about this classic roadside diner that has been around since 1983. The Maine Diner also features a separate gift shop called Remember the Maine Gift Shoppe with local souvenirs and gifts, as well as Maine Diner merchandise. 2265 Post Road, Route One Wells, Maine. Tel. 207-646-4441

Mystic Pizza, Mystic, Conn.
Made famous by the 1988 movie, Mystic Pizza starring Julia Roberts, Mystic Pizza is anything but Hollywood. This is a classic neighborhood pizza joint (in business since 1973) but with a bow tie -- that is, it is a nicely decorated, well-maintained, spotlessly clean local restaurant with no "dive" tendencies. The Italian-style pizza and pasta dishes are fantastic with a made-from-scratch taste. Excellent service, a good bar selection and a gift area round out this appealing downtown Mystic restaurant. 56 West Main St., Mystic, Conn. Tel. (860) 536-3700

Red Arrow Diner, Manchester, N.H. The Red Arrow Diner dates back to 1922! The comfort food here is excellent and the diner has gained a reputation as a place where politicians frequent (for their own enjoyment and other times for "regular guy" media opportunities). New Hampshire native and famous comedian Adam Sandler has been here, too! Lots of diners are just as good as the Red Arrow, but in the Manchester area, it's one of the best places to be for terrific food served up quickly and cheaply. 61 Lowell St., Manchester, N.H. Tel. (603) 626-1118

Durgin Park, Boston, Mass.
With its origins dating back to the pre- revolutionary days, Durgin Park evolved as a restaurant known for its rude waitresses and classic New England fare. The sassiness has generally waned since the mid-1970s, but the great clam chowder, Boston schrod and Yankee Pot Roast dishes remain amongst a varied menu and lively atmosphere in the heart of Faneuil Hall. 340 Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Tel (617) 227-2038.

Doyle's Cafe, Jamaica Plain (Boston, Mass.)
The ultimate Boston Irish pub since 1882 is a favorite amongst working class blue collar types, yuppies and politicians. The large, cavernous rooms accommodate those who like to drink beer and tell great stories in sharp Boston accents. The food is decent, offering the usual chicken, steak and seafood dishes, along with pizza. 3484 Washington St., Jamaica Plain. Tel. (617) 524-2345.

Pizzeria Regina, North End, Boston, Mass.
In business since 1926, the Italian-style brick oven pizzas haven't succumbed to suburban expansion. The service can have a little attitude and the atmosphere is rather plain, but none of that matters at this special Massachusetts landmark in the heart of this charming Italian neighborhood. While there have been a plethora of brick-oven pizza places opening in the region, none can quite duplicate the exquisite (can we use that word describing pizza?) pizza at this landmark North End eatery. It's simply pizza magic here! 11 1/2 Thatcher Street (North End), Boston, Mass. Tel. (617) 227-8180.

Hilltop Steak House, Saugus, Mass. Frank Giuffrida's rather offbeat 1961 idea of opening up a western-style steakhouse a little north of Boston turned out to be no "mis-steak!" Famous for its giant steaks, salads and drinks -- and for the plastic cows and 60-ft. high cactus outside -- the Hilltop is one of the largest restaurants in the country. The two stories of large faux-western dining rooms (including the Kansas City, Sioux City and Dodge City rooms) serve more than three million people a year. The waiting area spans the width of the restaurant A separate butcher shop is on the premises. Nothing subtle about the Hilltop, but they certainly deliver the goods! 855 Broadway, Saugus, Mass. Tel. (781) 233-7700

Woodman's, Essex, Mass
. Woodman's reportedly invented the fried clam in 1916. Today, Woodman's is a greatly expanded, true clam shack as described in Zagat as “A cult classic—right up there with baseball and apple pie, this Essex icon is an enduring American cult favorite.” Lobster and New England clam chowder is also a specialty here. 121 Main Street, Essex, Mass. Tel. 1-800-649-1773.

Legal Sea Foods, Boston area locations Starting as a fish market in 1950 in the Inman Square section of Cambridge, Mass., Legal Sea Foods eventually evolved into a household name for serving the freshest seafood possible. The Inman Square location burned many years ago, but the current 26 locations have maintained the quality and upgraded the atmosphere from its original shack-type ambiance. A bit expensive, but certainly worth the experience.
