Fazios: A pleasant surprise in York, Maine

by Eric H., Posted 2/4/02

The last thing we expected in seafood-rich Maine was an Italian restaurant every bit as good as the finest establishments in Boston's famed North End.

Fazios is located in the relaxed south coastal Maine Village of York. It is so good, in fact, that we have dined there three of the past four New Year's Eves. The laid-back atmosphere, attentive and friendly service, super prices and surprisingly innovative dishes make for a memorable time for those who want an excellent down-to-earth dining establishment without hype, pretension or stuffiness.

We particularly recommend a wonderfully tasty caesar salad, fresh on greens and not overwhelmed by too much of the homemade dressing. On recent visits, we have sampled a succulent half duck with cherry glaze, a simple but delectable seafood tecchia with scallops and shrimp pasta in a wine sauce, and a filet mignon

that is every bit as good as the best steak house offerings of the northeast. The chicken parmesan should serve as the prototype for this type of dish, with its abundance of plump chicken and absence of too much breading. Amazingly, these great dinners range between $10 and $20.

You'll never go wrong with pasta here, because the homemade sauces are, quite frankly, unparalleled. There is always a tatse of "homemade," and never a suspicion of "canned." We wish someone made sauces as well as Fazios closer to our home. Our home is near restaurant-rich Boston, so that should tell you a lot about the quality of Fazios concoctions. Fazios has, without a doubt, the freshest, most flavorful red and white sauces we have ever tasted.

Desserts confirm Fazios hall of fame status, here ar VisitingNew England.com. How about a plentiful and high quality Italian ice cream cake with pistachio, black raspberry, and Dutch chocolate ice creams, and add marachino cherries and a drizzle of claret sauce? Or perhaps a harvest apple blossom with a native cortland apple baked in phyllo pastry with sweet dried cherries and walnuts? It really doesn't get any better than this.

Fazios also serves wonderfully doughy homemade pizza, loaded with your favorite toppings. In fact, Fazios is connected to La Stalla, a separate part of the Fazios building, serving pizza and subs.

The next time you are in York , it's certainly all right by us if you skip the seafood places and go to Fazios instead. Fazio's just feels right, the perfect casual place with extraordinary food.
