Concord, NH, doesn't seem like a state capital. Coming out of our car on an October Saturday morning, a family of four smiled at us, drivers on both sides of the road stopped their cars to let us cross the street, and the typical urban noise levels of trucks, cars, blaring music, road repairs, crazy street people and the like were virtually non-existent. In our hour there, we heard no one swear and not one person we saw wore strange body piercings. For a moment, Concord seemed quieter than our small-town Massachusetts hometown.

We enjoyed a moment of urban tranquility in front of the New Hampshire State House. This magnificent building was designed in 1814 in a Greek Revival style and features a huge shining golden dome, bull's eye window and golden eagle. The surrounding 2.6 acres of grounds are perfectly manicured with statues of Daniel Webster, General John Stark, John P. Hale, and Franklin Pierce. The surrounding historical buildings and the rest of Main St. create a nice place for a leisurely walk with brick sidewalks and many shops and restaurants. How different this state capitol is than the constant barrage of city elements in Boston, MA, or Hartford, CT.

As the politics, no doubt, heat up inside the New Hampshire State House during anDowntown Concord, NH, photo election year, it sure was nice to have experienced a quiet respite from the political -- and urban madness -- that often disrupt our peace of mind. And here, we were right outside the state capitol building in what is officially designated as a city and the state capitol! What a nice city Concord is, a place we plan to come back to explore!

The Tilt'n Diner serves four star food in a diner car setting (20 minutes from Concord, NH)

By Eric H.

The Tilt'n Diner is a four star caliber restaurant in a 1950s diner car setting. What a great combination!

Try the homemade turkey dinner with all the "fixin's" and you'll wonder why you spent twice the amount in some overrated urban restaurant. Sample the tangy and ample macaroni and cheese and you'll understand how phony the market brands are. Taste the seafood chowder and wonder if Rand McNally possibly made a mistake and that the Town of Tilton is actually on the Maine seacoast. Other standout dishes include the wonderful homemade meatloaf dinner, a high end restaurant caliber caesar salad, a flavorful and abundant tuna melt and, as a side, perfectly formed french fries. The Tilt'n Diner serves breakfast, lunch and dinner under lots of neon within two dining rooms and the classic diner car-- all set to the background music of the Elvis Presley, the Coasters, Five Satins, Buddy Holly and other 1950s stars. It is the "feel good" restaurant of New England, enhanced by a friendly, sometimes wisecracking waitstaff and absolutely marvelous food.

Top off your meal with
some delicious blueberry pie, moist carrot cake or a sinful mud pie and you'll leave the Tilt'n Diner wishing that they would franchise into every community in the United States. They haven't franchised, however, so the next time you're in a 50 mile radius of Tilton, make sure you experience the Tilton Diner. It is indeed a true gem.
