Londonderry, NH: Small Town, Big-Time Attractions

Editor's note: The article below on Londonderry, NH, was submitted by Heather Rojo. If you would like to see your New England town or city mentioned at VisitingNewEngland.com, please submit your article, and we'll consider it for publication. Enjoy reading about Londonderry - we concur that this is a charming, active -- and very much underrated -- New England town.

Visiting Londonderry, NH, as a day trip or overnight is a must for families.  Only 35 miles from Boston and less than one hour from the New Hampshire Seacoast, we are located on Rt. 93 off Exits 4 and 5 on your way to the lakes or White Mountains.

There are five huge orchards in town, with U-Pick strawberries, cherries, raspberries, blueberries, apples, pumpkins and "you-name-it."  Most orchards have farm animals to pet and feed, baked goods and home canned products, local maple syrup and an array of things to sample.  Mack's Apples sells Richardson's ice cream, Sunnycrest Orchard sells local milk in bottles and homemade breads. Elwoods Orchard features a corn maze.

Londonderry is home to the famous Stonyfield Yogurt Company. Londonderry is also home to the Tupelo Music Hall, which gives acoustic concerts to such big names as Arlo Guthrie and Livingstone Taylor, but in a small intimate setting.  You can also hear local musicians at the Homestead Inn restaurant and Whippersnapper's restaurant.  Wednesday nights all summer long, there are concerts on the Londonderry Common.

You can cruise history by driving along the Historic Apple Way, which is 10 miles of historical markers scattered through our neighborhoods. You can also click here to pick up a map at the town hall or print one.

There is also a tea room, a sugar shack (Feb - March), an Aviation Museum, Historical Society, as well as  Old Home Day in August. Hikers enjoy our Musquash Conservation area, or a stroll along Beaver Brook.  You can even take a hot air balloon ride over our town and see the farms and orchards from a new perspective. Check out the websites www.londonderrynh.net or www.londonderrynh.org for more information.
