Five New England Childrens Museums to Visit in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island These
cultural day trips provide a full-day, fun educational experience,
perfect for school vacations and day trips!
![]() by Eric H., VisitingNewEngland.com With the gas crisis keeping many travelers local, one of the best things to do is take a day trip and head to a local museum. The New England region does not disappoint, having some of the country's best museums for the family: 1. Childrens' Museum of Maine, Portland, Maine -- One of our favorites, the Childrens' Museum in Maine (Portland) 142 Free Street, Portland, Maine. Tel: 207-828-1234 2. Museum of Science, Boston, MA -- One of America's best! This ever-expanding, pioneering modern museum of science and technology includes a five-story IMAX dome screen featuring "flora, fauna and faraway places," a Planetarium with a starry sky focusing on outer space, laser technology shows and presentations, film presentations in 3D, live presentations and revolving and static exhibits. They should have a hotel in the facility since it's almost impossible to see it all in one day! Museum of Science, 617-723-2500, Science Park, Boston, MA Tel., 617-589-0417 (TTY) 3. The Discovery Museums of Acton, Acton MA -- Really one of the region's most underrrated museums, the Discovery Museums of Action, MA is actually two museums -- one for toddlers and pre-schoolers site in a charming 120-year Vistorian home and a more modern separate facility for elementary, secondary and high school children. The Museums focus on "interactive discovery, hands-on inquiry and scientific investigations." It's all fun, especially the tornado funnel stimulator as children generate the funnel by walking in a circle! You could easily spend a day at a museum that you thought would take only an hour or two to visit. The Discovery Museums, 177 Main Street Acton (978) 264-4200 4. Providence Childrens' Museum, Providence, RI -- . Best for children under 12, the Providence Childrens' Museum explores the arts, culture, history and science in a colorful setting. Our favorite is the Waterways exhibit where children learn about the way water moves at this huge, artistically designed pool by rolling balls down a twister ramp, building fountains to create different water distribution, and floating boats past a waterfall. Seems like the adults were just as fascinated as the children by this amazing display! The Providence Childrens' Museum also features a very interesting "time traveler adventure" on people who came to Rhode Island from different countries. Providence Childrens' Museum, 101 South St., Providence, RI. Tel. (401) 273-KIDS 5. Childrens' Museum in Easton, Easton, MA -- A great example of local community in action, the Childrens' Museum in Easton is expertly and passionately run by a small staff and is largely volunteer driven by local residents. Smaller in size, but bigger in heart and spirit than many larger museums, the Childrens' Museum in Easton packs a lot of arts, humanities and science activities and programs into a historic, old former fire station. There's a doctors office, a dress up area, a lobster boat, a work shop, arts and crafts room, a diner and lots more at a very reasonable price! Childrens' Museum in Easton, The Old Fire Station 9 Sullivan Ave., Easton, MA. Tel.: 508-230-3789
