OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AT FIRST NIGHT BOSTON 2006
(BOSTON) First Night Boston is the country's oldest and largest New Year's arts celebration. On Dec. 31, 2005 from 12:00 noon to midnight, First Night presents its 30 th annual day-long festival of art, music, dance, ice sculpture, fireworks and more. First Night is an alcohol-free event that welcomes children, families and revelers of all ages to celebrate community and unity through the arts. The 200 exhibits and performances at this year's event include something for everyone, including the following outdoor exhibitions and events:
ICE SCULPTURES
Sculptors begin working on sculptures anytime from Dec. 28-31, so come by and see them work. On Dec. 31, sculptures are illuminated with a brilliant display of theatrical colors.
- Steve Rose and Ice Effects create Imagination, a child's bedtime story, on the Boston Common Frog Pond.
- Don Chapelle carves Here Fishy, Fishy at Brewer's Fountain on the Common. He promises a beautiful view of tropical fish and coral reef life.
- Eric Fontecchio and Alfred Georgs of Brookline Ice transform Copley Square into a glittering spectacle with Hansel and Gretel on one side of Trinity Plaza, and a very special First Night 30 th Anniversary Sculpture on the other side.
- The Northeastern University Carving Team once again presents The Husky, their beloved mascot, at the Krentzman Quad at Northeastern.
FIREWORKS
Mayor Menino and Boston 4 Celebrations present Boston's Family Fireworks Celebration, a very special Family Fireworks show that will light up the Boston Common at approximately 7:10 pm. For the seventh consecutive year, the City of Boston rings in the New Year with an intimate 11-minute fireworks display, including dozens of special effects and a barrage of color. At midnight, we ring in 2006 with the traditional Midnight Grand Finale over Boston Harbor. The skies above the harbor are transformed into a brilliant tapestry of light, in this display by Zambelli Internationale.
COUNTDOWNS
There are midnight countdowns at Copley Square and at the Parkman Bandstand on the Boston Common. Join CBS4 Anchors Lisa Hughes and Josh Binswanger by the ice sculptures on Dartmouth St. to count down to the New Year on live television, with dramatic lighting and projection on the Boston Public Library.
OTHER OUTDOOR EVENTS AND EXHIBITS
The Junkman and Mister Rourke
World-class percussionist/composer and sculptor The Junkman (Donald Knaack)
performs exclusively on recycled materials. Pioneering turntablist Mister Rourke incorporates scratching and mixing into live performances. Put it together for an unorthodox clash of junk percussion and dance grooves. They perform in Copley Square as part of the countdown, beginning at 9:30 and going until midnight.
"Sewing Wishes/Harvesting Dreams"
On the Boston Common Parade Ground, artists Nora Valdez and Matthew Terry, with students from the Boston Day and Evening Academy, create a site-specific installation that addresses imagination and inner peace. See the artists at work on December 30 and 31, and see the installation illuminated after dark at First Night. The High Schoolers in the Mayor's Mural Crew create a large scale installation on the Boston Common Parade Ground, of kimonos inspired by Boston's sister city of Kyoto. Sidewalk Sam and his band of sidewalk artists from Art Street create chalk drawings at Lafayette Mall on the Boston Common, inviting children to join in, from 1:00 4:00 p.m.
Lonely Gus and the One Night Stand plays the Parkman Bandstand on the Boston Common at 7:00 p.m. Susannah Lawrence's video projected "Giants" will look down on revelers in Copley Square beginning at 5:00 p.m. A general admission button for First Night 2006 is all you need for all First Night indoor events! Buttons are just $15 per person (children under four are admitted free). The button goes on sale December 1 at Greater Boston Shaw's/Star locations, L'il Peach, Store 24, Tedeschi's, Borders Books and Music and AAA Branch Office locations, as
