Sunset at Short Sands Beach, York Beach, Maine

Article and photo by Eric H.

The stretch of beach is limited and the water is too cold to swim for many until maybe the last week of August, but that doesn't hold back Short Sands Beach from being one of New England's greatest ocean beaches.

Being contiguous and seamless with the shops, restaurants, zoo and amusement park and other fun things to do in York Beach, ME, adds up to the ultimate summer place. The beach affords a classic view of the rocky coast, old sea captain's homes and the "fun time USA" look of a bowling alley, fried seafood shack, and beach merchandise shop. It's a great family place to play frisbee, make a sandcastle, or watch a musical performance at the gazebo. Short Sands Beach also has a playground area that sometimes seems more popular than the beach.

Great times at Short Sands Beach are not limited to the summer. The less crowded, isolated feel of the spring, fall and if you're brave, winter, reveal the true beauty of this New England travel destination. The sounds of silence provide a nice alternative to the rather stentorian summers at the beach, resulting in one of the most pleasant ocean beach walks imaginable.
