Concord, Mass.
by Eric H.
The downtown area retains a wonderful
sense of history with the Old North Bridge, superbly maintained
colonial homes, the feel-good atmosphere of the Colonial Inn
(lodging and a fine restaurant in a historic setting), tree-lined
streets, the relaxing Monument Square with its classic New Englan
village green, the famous Walden Pond and nice, little independently
owned shops.
Walden Pond, in particular, is worth
visiting. Walden Pond is the former home of one of Amrica's great
misanthropes, Henry David Thoreau, and current home of thousands
of visitors enjoying the mellow 45 minute walk around one of
Massachusetts' prettiest ponds, a small beach and hiking trails
pleasing everyone from the corporate weekend warrior, pocket
protector and all, to the 1960s hippies with pony tails and long
dresses (this includes women, too).
