Scenes of New England Photo Gallery: Rhode Island State House, Providence, RI

Providence State House, Providence RI

Article and photo by Eric H.

The Rhode Island State House in Providence, RI, is a sight to behold, so grand in neoclassical achitectural style.  Built in 1904, the Rhode Island State House possesses one of only four self-supported marble domes in the world. The building is made of white Georgia marble, has 15 milion bricks and 1,309 tons of iron floor beams.  With picture-perfect finely-manicured landscaping to frame the building, the Rhode Island State House is my favorite of all the state capitol buildings in New England -- quite noteworthy, given the amazing state capitol buildings in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.  Once rather lonely in a formerly downtrodden area, the Rhode Island State House looks all that much better now, given the spectacular renaissance that Providence has experienced in the past several years.  Nearby is the classic intown mall called Providence Place, and Waterplace Park with its wonderful water views, vibrant city events and places to walk, making this area one of the nicest city districts in New England.
