Sunday River in 737 words
An adventure is waiting for in the mountains of Maine. Sunday
River offers diverse terrain spread across 131 trails on eight
interconnecting mountain peaks.
Carved from the mountains, Sunday
River evokes the spirit, raw beauty, and
lively soul of Maine. Guests will find stunning views of the
Mahoosuc Mountain Range and Mount Washington and the Presidentials
from atop the peaks. The terrain offers a variety of steeps,
glades, and wide-open corduroy cruisers as well as an expansive
learning area. There are four terrain parks for varying ability
levels, as well as a rail park and Zaugg-cut Superpipe. Its award-winning
network of 18 lifts includes four high-speed quads.
At Sunday River, it's all about
the snow. The resort was built on the premise that the most important
ingredient to a successful ski resort is the snow; the resort
refined and developed snowmaking, taking it from a simple science
to an art. The snowmaking system is the most technically advanced
system in the East, capable of converting 9,000 gallons of water
per minute to snow. The system is the world's largest high-pressure
snowmaking system, with a pioneer computer-controlled system
that was developed in-house.
The computer analyzes air temperate
and humidity level to determine where gauges controlled by the
snowmakers should be set and though the system is sophisticated,
snowmakers emphasize that experience aids in the process. The
resort's snowmakers are among the most veteran in the industry.
For first-time skiers or riders,
getting on the slopes is easier thanks to the resort's renowned
Perfect Turn ® ski school program, which includes a three-day
guaranteed Learn to Ski/Ride program as well as a variety of
other learn-to programs. Or guests may take their skiing or riding
to the next level with a Perfect Turn clinic. Group and private
lessons are available and specialty clinics are available for
Black Diamond skiing, moguls or glades. Learn to Ski programs
are also available for children three years-old and up and the
resort has three licensed day care facilities on site for children
ages six weeks to six years.
When it's time to settle in,
Sunday River features the most slope side lodging in New England.
The Jordan Grand Resort Hotel and Conference Center or Grand
Summit Resort Hotel and Conference Center offer a variety of
amenities including outdoor heated pools, whirlpool spas, full
service fitness centers, on site child care, full service restaurants
and café, valet and room service and slope side access
and convenience. Guests can ski or ride from the door of their
hotels to some of the longest and most exciting trails at Sunday
River. Sunday River also features over 700 slope side condos
with direct access to trails. All condominiums feature a full
kitchen and bath and are also ideal for groups or families. Condominium
amenities offer on-site laundry, heated pools, hot tubs, free
trolley transportation throughout the resort and The Mountain
Explorer free shuttle to and from the quintessential New England
village of Bethel, just six miles down the road. The Snow Cap
Inn and Snow Cap Ski Dormitory are both within walking distance
of the lifts and are one of the most economical ways to lodge
at Sunday River. Snow Cap Inn features New England charm at its
best. The Snow Cap Ski dormitory is the only group facility of
its kind in New England and is ideal for school groups or youth
ski trips.
When the lifts shut down, the
fun continues at Sunday River. Both on-mountain and off-mountain
restaurants along the access road and in the village offer a
diverse selection of dining options including traditional pub
fare, wood-fired pizza, vegetarian, fine dining, and ethnic cuisine.
For those who like to cap the
day in an active mode, the White Cap Fun offers two lighted,
lift-serviced tubing runs, ice-skating and arcade. It is also
home to the Bud Light Concert Series that brings top national
acts to the stage, and it's the best place to view frequent fireworks
displays. Other evening options include dog sledding, which is
offered from the resort's South Ridge base area each evening.
Whether a family getaway or a
romantic winter vacation, Sunday River is worth the trip.
Sunday River is proud to be a
part of the American Skiing Company family of resorts, which
also includes Sugarloaf/USA in Maine, Killington and Mount Snow
in Vermont, Attitash in New Hampshire, Steamboat in Colorado,
and The Canyons in Utah.

Berkshire Ski Resorts: Accessible,
Affordable and Diverse
THE BERKSHIRES, MA-Location.
Location. Location. Ok, those are three good reasons to visit
Berkshire County for skiing but there are plenty of others. Location
is a big incentive because the Berkshires is the closest, most
accessible major ski region for many visitors. Also, the county
is situated in one of the world's most scenic resort areas, amid
beautiful rolling hills and pastoral New England scenery. Off
the slopes, skiers aren't trapped in a tangle of expensive ski
towns. Instead, travelers can explore a variety of surrounding
towns, each with its own particular charm and attractions.
Next to location, variety might be the most important basis for
visiting the Berkshires for a ski adventure. Families, singles,
experienced skiers and novices can select areas that cater specifically
to their needs and abilities. All Berkshire ski areas are full
service facilities, providing both ski and snowboard rentals.
Ski Butternut (413-528-2000/www.SkiButternut.com), Great Barrington,
is a family-friendly Berkshire resort, with 22 trails; ten lifts
including their third quad chair lift installed this summer;
and one of the region's best terrain parks. All trails funnel
to the same base area, so family groups won't get separated.
A great mountain for first-timers, Butternut also presents plenty
of challenge for more advanced skiers and riders. The resort
offers some softer trails from the summit, allowing most beginners
to enjoy the entire mountain experience their first day.
The mountain's five lane tubing center, added three years ago,
continues to receive rave reviews. Eight kilometers of cross-country
are also available. Butternut's powerful snowmaking system has
more than 150 snow guns blanketing 100 percent of their 22 slopes
and trails. The area offers high performance rentals, group and
private lessons and the region's largest children's programs
offering lessons for beginners to racers.
Butternut features a $45 per day Midweek Ski & Stay package
and more than 40 lodging properties offer weekend "ski &
stay" packages-ranging from extraordinarily economical to
incredibly indulgent. Notable deals include: $15 Lift Tickets
every Monday through Thursday all season (excluding holidays);
affordable anytime lift ticket "3-Packs" ($99 Adult
or $75 Jr.) of three anytime lift ticket vouchers; online specials;
and extremely low-cost season passes, ranging from $59 for young
kids to $199 for adults. Look for the "5th graders ski free"
offer on their website.
This fall Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort (413-738-5500/800-882-8859/www.
jiminypeak.com) in Hancock will complete J.J.'s Lodge, a 6.8
million dollar facility that replaces the old East lodge. J.J.'s
Lodge will have the ski and snowboard school desk; a modern food
court with a plethora of dining options, day and seasonal lockers;
15 condominiums; and other skier service facilities. J.J.'s will
also be a perfect venue for larger (more than 300 attendees)
weddings and conferences during the spring, summer and fall.
The largest ski and snowboard resort in southern New England,
Jiminy offers slope-side lodging, a high-speed six-passenger
lift, excellent children's programs and incredible snowmaking.
The recently completed Village Center at Jiminy Peak includes
retail shopping, dining and a café with WiFi access.
Accommodations include Jiminy's all-suite Country Inn and mountainside
condominiums. Special lift and lodging packages are available.
Online vacation planners will appreciate the resort's comprehensive
e-commerce section for lodging reservations, ski and snowboard
school programs, children's programs and discount offers.
Catamount Ski Area (413-528-1262/800-342-1840/www.catamountski.com)
in South Egremont added three new trails last season for a total
of 32, and completed a superb new beginner area. They also reconfigured
a whole section of the mountain and christened it "The Meadows."
It's a huge, seven-trail complex of green-circle (beginner) terrain
perfect for those ready to start exploring mountains.
Catamount lays claim to the most diverse terrain mix in the Berkshires,
covering 1,000 vertical feet and featuring 100 percent snowmaking.
It offers one of the best beginner areas anywhere including-in
addition to The Meadows-a super-gentle slope served by an easy-to-ride
Wonder Carpet lift.
Located on the border with New York, Catamount skiers can take
off in one state and end up in another, the only area besides
Tahoe where this is possible. The area offers fabulous cruising
terrain, including the popular Sidewinder trail and Ridge Run
which, combined with the brand-new Upper Promenade trail, takes
Catamount guests on the Berkshire's longest ski and snowboard
run-2 12 miles in all.
For advanced skiers and riders, there are wonderful challenges.
The Megaplex Terrain Park relocated last season and is bigger
and better than ever. The Catapult, the only true double-diamond
trail in the Berkshires, complements a number of other great
black diamond trails.
Cross-country skiing is found throughout the region, as well
as snowshoeing and skating. Moonlit trails through woodlands
for cross-country ski enthusiasts are unique and breathtaking.
Widely known as America's Premier Cultural Resort, Berkshire
County offers plenty of activities off the slopes, too. From
world-class museums and historical sites to a considerable assortment
of dining and lodging facilities, outlet shopping and antiques
dealers, the Berkshires gives ski visitors a full winter's worth
of places to go and things to see. For complete Berkshire County
information, call 866-444-1815 or visit www.berkshires.org.

MORE SNOWMAKING, MORE GROOMING,
NEW BUMP RUN AND TERRAIN PARK AT WATERVILLE VALLEY
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Waterville
Valley Resort has spent over $550,000 this summer on key snowmaking
and grooming projects to bring guest's on-mountain winter experience
to a higher level for 2006-07. Crews have also been widening
trails, cleaning out tree skiing areas and adding a new Burton
Progression terrain park.
EARLIER START TO SNOWMAKING
Waterville Valley covers 100 percent of its terrain with snowmaking
and continually upgrades its snowmaking force and efficiency
each year. With four new SMI fan guns and 50 retrofitted
Ratnik tower guns, Waterville Valley will be able to open 25%
more acreage in the early season. The additional firepower
will also help the resort open a greater variety of terrain earlier
including the learning areas of Lower Meadows and J-Bar as well
as Exhibition Terrain Park.
NEW TOP-TO-BOTTOM BUMP ROUTE
AND WIDER TRAILS
For bump skiers, a new blue square, intermediate bump route will
run from the summit connecting Tyler Too to Old Tecumseh to Lower
Sel's. The resort will also build a variety of mogul runs
on terrain for all ability levels. For small bumps on lower
intermediate terrain, head to Rock Island on Valley Run.
Medium bumps on intermediate to advanced terrain will be found
on Tyler Too off the North Side. For large bumps on steep
terrain, the Sunnyside black diamond trails of Ciao, True Grit,
and Bobby's Run will be the place to go.
To ensure Waterville Valley can
continue to host World-Cup level events, the famous Tommy's World
Cup GS Trail, named after former U.S. Olympic Racer and founder
of Waterville Valley, Tom Corcoran, will be taking on a wider
look to meet current FIS race course standards. The Waterville
Valley Academy and Black and Blue Trail Smashers (WVBBTS) produce
some of the nation's top winter athletes by training on Tommy's
World Cup and other mountain terrain.
As guests offload from the signature
"Quadzilla" lift, an expanded unload area will give
skiers and snow boarders more area to strap into bindings, fix
and check equipment or meet for snow sports lessons. Upper
Valley Run and the top of Valley Run has been widened by 20 -
25' due to cutting trees out of the tree island on skiers right.
"The purpose of the trail widening is to provide a safe
and efficient flow of traffic coming down Upper Valley Run"
said Director of Mountain Operations Rob Batchelder.
NEW BURTON PROGRESSION TERRAIN
PARK
Based on the resort's dedication to the freestyle snowboarding
scene, Burton Snowboards has selected Waterville Valley as an
Eastern site for the latest creative idea in snowboard progression.
Located on lower White Caps, the Burton Progression Park will
feature smaller versions of freestyle terrain in a laid-back,
fun environment for riders of all ages.
Waterville Valley plans to open for the season on November 18,
2006. For more information about Waterville Valley, please
call 800-GO-VALLEY or visit www.waterville.com.

LOON MOUNTAIN TERRAIN PARKS
RATED #6 IN NORTH AMERICA AND #1 IN THE EAST
LINCOLN, N.H. - Loon Mountain is pleased to announce Transworld
SNOWboarding has rated Loon Mountain Terrain Parks at #6 in the
2007 Top 10 Best Parks Resort Poll in North America. Loon
is also the only resort in the East to make the list where votes
were logged and tallied on the TWS website.
"Being rated in Transworld's ten best parks in North America
and the only East Coast resort is a great reassurance of our
dedication for creating the best freestyle training grounds and
top-notch terrain parks for riders," said terrain park manager
Jay Scambio. "We put so much time in creating parks
for all ability levels and offering every caliber of events,
and it's a great feeling to know that the readers of Transworld
support Loon's efforts."
Loon Mountain features six terrain parks which range in every
step of difficulty from the beginner Burton Progression Park
to the expert signature Loon Mountain Park. There are also
'Top Secret Parks' located throughout the mountain. Look
for them as you ski or ride. Loon has something around
every corner and when you get off any of the lifts and can easily
ride one of the six parks or just shred some fun terrain.
Additionally, the park crew is constantly changing up features
from week-to-week to keep things fresh.
Loon Mountain terrain parks include:
Burton Progression Park - Entry level park with small
features
The Burton Progression Park was introduced last season as one
of the only two of its kind in the world. This freestyle
terrain park is a small-feature park designed specifically for
entry-level park riders and the snowsports lessons programs.
Its purpose is to make on-hill learning easier and more attractive
to new skiers and riders looking for a relaxed terrain park environment.
This season, three new fangun power source disconnects have been
added to the Little Sister Trail, where the Burton Progression
Park sits, to ensure the park gets up and running early.
Premier Snowskate Park - Small features
The Premiere Snowskate Park is located in the base area of the
Octagon Lodge with small jibs.
Bear Island Park - Small to Medium features
The Bear Island Park features rollers, berms, and small jumps.
Just off of a green circle rated trail, Bear Island is a great
learning area for beginners or a warm-up for intermediate riders
Picked Rock Park - Small to Medium features
The Picked Rock Park hosts a mix of jibs and jumps for beginners
to intermediate riders. Located on the top of Lower Picked Rock
Trail, this park is a great place to hit up on your way down
to the LMP.
Northstar Park - Medium features
The Northstar Park is a great place to dial in new tricks or
polish up on old ones. It features hips, rollers, tabletops,
step-downs and a bunch of rails and boxes like in the LMP just
on a smaller scale. You can also hit up the minipipe at the bottom
of the park and hop back on the Kanc quad for another run.
Loon Mountain Park (LMP) - Large features
The Loon Mountain Park, or LMP, is the signature park at Loon
Mountain. Home to the 425' long Superpipe, jibs like the U-box,
battleship box, S-rail, A-frame box and huge 32' Wall Ride, this
park is designed for upper level riders. At 3,600 feet
in length, you can flow through six features in a row and you'll
only be through half of the LMP never hitting the same line.
This season the LMP has taken on new projects to ensure the park
stays as the best in the East. The towering 32' wallride
has literally had a face lift with new lexan on the wall to provide
a silky smooth sliding surface. A snowmaking fangun has
also been moved and strategically placed above the superpipe
to aid in a quicker superpipe build. Two new barrel bonks,
a 20 ft. down box, new sliding surfaces on boxes and new paint
on all park features will finish off this years improvements.
Loon Mountain also offers terrain park events for all abilities.
New this season, Grenade Strikes Back and the revamped Droppin'
In Women's Weekend joins other high caliber events such as Forum
Youngbloods, Thanksjibbing, Open Season Ski and Snowboard, The
Main Event, Fluorescent Nights, Shut Up and Snowskate, Red Bull
Schooled Ski, Shop Showdown, Last Call with Eastern Boarder,
Hike and Huck and numerous USASA events. A full terrain
park events schedule can be viewed at Loon's dedicated terrain
park page http://terrainparks.loonmtn.com.
