Celebration of winter in this classic New England town

The 33rd Stowe Winter Carnival returns to chase away the winter blues from January 19-21, 2007 as Stowe, Vermont celebrates to the theme of "The Stowe Must Go On!". Voted by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce as one of the Top 10 Winter Events for eight years running, Stowe Winter Carnival features captivating town-wide events for both kids and adults. A top attraction each year is the Nationally Sanctioned Ice Carving Competition preceded by demo carvings in front of area Stowe businesses.

On-snow events include the Stowe Super-G Schuss at Stowe Mountain Resort and SnowVolleyBall Tournament. Other activities include Kids' Cross-Country Fun Races, Kids' Karnival Kaos and the Vermont traditional Chicken Pie Supper served family style by the fellowship of the Stowe Community Church. Finally the Big Party: Village Night Celebration held on Main Street in the historic village of Stowe. Costumed characters boogie to the music and the evening is capped with fireworks. Adults can continue on to the Matterhorn nightclub to dance the night away.

Sunday morning, Vermont Ski Museum hosts the Warren Miller Movie Night as this legendary ski filmmaker unveils his 57th feature film, 2007's "Off the Grid" More information can be found at www.stowewintercarnival.com.

WINTER ADVENTURE ABOUNDS IN STOWE, VERMONT

With Summer just behind us, it's difficult to imagine that in a few short months our mountains will be covered in snow and the town will be bustling with winter-wonderland fun. The combination of magnificent Mount Mansfield and the old world charm of Stowe Village has beckoned guests to our mountain retreat for over 200 years. With an average snowfall of 22 feet, Stowe is typically blanketed in white from mid-November through April. At 4,395 feet, Stowe's Mt. Mansfield is-literally -the high point of Vermont. Sleigh Riding in Stowe
There is a host of sleigh riding options in Stowe. From romantic 2 person sleigh rides to larger group sleighs filled with hay bales as seats, a ride through Stowe's snow-filled pastures and woods will be a treat to remember.

Snowmobiling in Stowe

Snowshoeing in Stowe
Stowe is home to some of the most extensive and diverse trails in the East, making it the perfect destination resort for winter's fastest-growing sport: snowshoeing. Snowshoeing is a fun, healthy way to enjoy the winter outdoors and new, lightweight materials make it easier than ever. Anyone who likes to walk or hike in the summer can snowshoe in the winter, as long as they're prepared for the weather--it's that simple.

Stowe has a wide variety of terrain, so snowshoers can go at any pace. A great place to start is on the flat, 5.3-mile Recreation Path, which winds its way through forests and meadows, and crosses the West Branch River 11 times on arched wooden bridges. Beginners can get used to wearing snowshoes and more experienced snowshoers can either enjoy a leisurely walk or warm up before heading to more difficult terrain.

Guests can get more out of their adventure by taking a snowshoe tour. Snowshoe tours are available at the following centers: Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa, Trapp Family Lodge, and Umiak Outfitters.

The Green Mountain Club, Vermont's largest hiking organization, has compiled a list of nine favorite snowshoe hikes in the Stowe area. The list includes trail lengths, estimated hiking times, degrees of difficulty, locations of the trailheads, and descriptions of the trails. For maps, guide books, and information about snowshoe hikes, visitors can stop at the Green Mountain Club on Route 100.
