New Hampshire Travel>>>Chocorua Lake, Tamworth, N.H. Chocorua Lake in Tamworth, N.H., Reflects the Scenic Beauty of New Hampshire ![]() ![]() Chocorua Lake. Photo credit: Lawrence Carbonaro Article by Eric H. Located in the southern sector of the White Mountains region (Route 16), Chocorua Lake is not only stunning for what it offers -- a pristine, wide, scenic lake and stunning views of the 3,490 ft. high summit of Mt. Chocorua -- but also what it doesn't have: overdevelopment. This is the New Hampshire that you expect with its placid demeanor and the relative absence of anything commercial or industrial. All that's left for you is to relax and soak in the magic of rural New Hampshire. Although primarily a summer vacation destination, we recommend visiting in the fall, too, for its splendid foliage colors (validation of this is in the photo above) Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing are allowed at this beautiful lake -- all accessible off Route 16 on the east side of the lake. We also recommend, if you are so inclined, hiking Mt. Chocorua. It's about a two to three hour hike and is also accessible off Route 16 (Liberty Trail). There's also the Champney Falls Trail, off the Champney Falls parking lot on the Kancamagus Highway (Rt. 112) Liberty Trail. There's a common misconception amongst weekend hikers that the climb is easy. To this writer, that just isn't the case, as the hike started out easy but got more difficult as trails became more steep. Still, it's an easier climb than, say, Mts. Washington or Cardigan (that last quarter of the hike is brutal!), and you'll be rewarded with incredible views of New Hampshire mountains including the Presidential Ranges (featuring Mt. Washington). But you just might want to relax and take in the beauty of the lake without breaking a sweat. Depending on your preference, either way is a fine way to spend a day in one of our favorite areas of New Hampshire. Choucora Lake and New Hampshire Travel Resources: Hiking Mt.
