Freeport is well-known for its chain outlet stores, but I
will always go with the locally-owned shops in this bustling Maine town
like the Mangy Moose.
There's something so endearing and appealing about this store. After
20-plus years in business, the Mangy Moose never fails to amaze with
its moose-theme merchandise featuring books, cards, art, taxidermy,
antiques and clothing. This isn't your run-of-the-mill gift and
souvenir shop -- how could it be when centering on moose? Additionally,
the staff is great -- so friendly, helpful and clearly loving the moose
theme.
So many souvenir and gift shops go the cheap route in tourist towns by
selling cheap goods and going for the cheap laugh (usually in the form
of a crude t-shirt), but the Mangy Moose is a different animal.
Additionally, with surprisingly fair pricing, you can come out of here
--
with a little discipline -- sticking to your travel budget (starting as
low as 85 cents with moose pencils). Also, Mangy Moose is open
year-round, especially nice to know for Christmas and holiday shopping.
The best thing, though, about the Mangy Moose is that there's no other
store like it in Freeport, or possibly Maine, for that matter. I
remember Freeport before the outlet stores arrived -- when it was a
sleepy, little town. Even though today's version provides a great
retail
service to visitors, I find there's a generic feel to the overall
shopping experience with so many stores you could find anywhere. Truth
be told, I love a downtown with interesting, locally-owned shops.
I continue to focus on, and admire wonderfully locally-owned and
operated Freeport businesses like the L.L.
Bean flagship store, Wicked
Whoopies, the historic Harraseeket Inn and, of course, the Mangy Moose,
and
would travel the two hours from our home just to visit these great
places. Here is a store that respects the customer and delivers one of
the most fun shopping experiences I have ever been to in Maine! I feel
the Mangy Moose should definitely be a "moose-see" store when visiting
Freeport.
