Mother Nature was more than generous when it came to forming the innate beautiful scenery that graces Vermont -- and with mankind following through quite nicely with its quaint villages, country stores and beautiful churches and homes.

I recently took a trip to southern Vermont and was awed by my visits through Putney, Dummerston, Newfane, Townshend, Jamaica, Londonderry, Weston, Dover and Wilmington. Weston was definitely my favorite town with the presence of a beautiful town common, the Vermont Country Store, the quaint Weston Village Store, a stunning gristmill and waterfall, the look of the stately Weston Playhouse and a nice concentration of old, well maintained homes and municipal buildings. It also seemed like more of a "community" as I saw some great neighborly interaction on the town common as well as activities for the kids, on this given day. While I wasn't quite as impressed with Brattleboro, it's a lot nicer "developed" town than what I see in many other areas of New England with several interesting shops and some neat-looking cafes and restaurants. Although I prefer inland New England towns like Bennington, Vt., Lexington, Mass., Concord, Mass., North Conway, N.H., and Bethel, Maine, Brattleboro is, nevertheless, definitely worth a visit.

Here are some pictures I took along the backroads, villages and towns in Vermont, paying close attention to the elements that make this state so special and unique:

Picture of Vermont Country Store, Weston Vermont
The Vermont Country Store is famous and lives up to its reputation as a premier country store in Vermont with rustic charm and lots of hard-to-find merchandise. I bought some delicious homemade fudge here!

Picture of Weston Playhouse
The Weston Playhouse, Vermont's oldest professional theater.

A classic Vermont covered bridge in Dummerston.

Picture of West River, Dummerston Vermont

I saw virtually hundreds of cars parked along Route 30 in Dummerston and proceeded to discover the West River with swimming and hiking opportunities. Where are all the people? I have no idea, only saw a few!

A classic Vermont scene in Newfane.

Gazebo and church scene in downtown, picture perfect Townshend.

A 100-mile view of Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts from Hogback Mountain in Wilmington.

Picture of Putney Diner, Putney Vermont
I had a great fresh roasted turkey sandwich with homemade stuffing and cheese at the Putney Diner in Putney, Vt.  Friendly staff and townsfolk here helped make my visit that much better! What a classic diner -- nothing fancy, but oh-so-good!

Picture of Putney General Store, Putney Vermont
I read that the Putney General Store was destroyed by fire a few years back. So nice to see it built back up and serve as an integral part of this beautiful, sleepy town.

Picture of downtown Brattleboro Vermont

Downtown Brattleboro, Vt. Nice place, great job of revitalization, look forward to more meaningful community restoration.

New! Here are some recent Vermont photos taken during road trips through Burlington, Stowe, Woodstock and Middlebury.

The Woodstock Inn in Woodstock is one of Vermont's grandest places to stay.

Shaw's General Store in Stowe Vt.
What's Vermont without a general store? Shaw's is one's of Vermont's best and located in the beautiful community of Stowe.
