New England Hotel Guide>>> The 123 Restaurant and Inn Review, York Beach, Maine

Oceanfront York Beach, Maine, Lodging is as Easy as "123"

Article and photos by Eric H. (posted 9/21/09)

There's a new kid in town in York Beach, Maine -- The 123 Restaurant and Inn -- and its numbers add up quite well when looking for high-quality oceanfront Maine lodging and dining.

The 123, formerly the Inn at Long Sands, still features stunning ocean views of Long Sands Beach from every room.  You can never take away the location, no matter what lodging management transition!

For those who loved the Inn at Long Sands, we think you'll enjoy the 123 just as much, if not more. Rooms have been upgraded to feature comfortable memory foam beds, as well as plexiglass railings to allow for unobstructed views from each private balcony. By introducing a full-service restaurant (with bar), the indoor-outdoor seating allows for more terrific water views. Although some might miss the traditional coastal charm decor of the Inn at Long Sands guest rooms and the living room with fireplace, rocking chair and chess board (the former living room is now part of the restaurant), the 123 actually offers a vast improvements to what was offered at the Inn at Long Sands. Each room, in addition to the aforementioned memory foam beds and private balconies, offers a 32-inch flat screen television, free WIFI, complimentary bottled water, a comfy "123 beach chair," a refrigerator/freezer and room service. Additionally, The 123 offers in-room spa service through Sea Scape Spa, of York Beach. Also, you'll still be the beneficiary of fundamental former Inn at Long Sands staples like friendly and professional service -- and in-room ceiling fans, hair dryers, shampoos, soaps, and individual heating and air conditioning.

The 123 fulfills a rare York Beach travel feature, offering breakfast, lunch, dinner and lodging under one roof. The restaurant seems to be as much a priorty as the inn, given its significant expansion of space and menu selections. Specials include burgers, lobster bisque, lobster, haddock, scallops, salmon, rib eye, seafood linguini and chicken penne. The creative chef presented to us a breakfast clearly far beyond the norm, featuring delicious omelets, one with tomato and herbs (see picture below), and the other with spinach and goat cheese. Fresh fruit and homemade peach and berry jams accompanied this fabulous meal. What a fantastic way to start the day!

The biggest draw of The 123, however, remains the ocean and its views. Imagine waking up to views like this from your own private balcony on a given morning:

Amazing, isn't it?  Ocean views aren't always enough, though, as we have stayed near the sea at inns and bed and breakfasts that would have been truly substandard if not for location.  The great thing about The 123 is that even if you took away the view, this "new kid in town" could stand on its own as a high quality lodging destination.  You really get the best of both worlds here: oceanfront lodging and a well-run lodging establishment.
