The restaurant industry has become oversaturated with burger places with only a few adding anything close to consistently tasty, innovative burgers ultimately worth returning for another meal.

Boston Burger Company is one of those select few that rises above all the trends and attitudes, acting like a bridge between the best of traditional burger places and modern, 21st century versions. What impresses me most about the Boston Burger Company is that they don't try to do too much with its burgers: They cook it right and accordingly to customer specification and serve it in a big portion. You'd be surprised how many burger joints and restaurants screw up those fundamentals. I recently ordered the Alpine burger with Swiss cheese and mushroom and immediately fell in love again with the idea of having a nice, juicy burger for dinner. It has been a while since having a certified mouthwatering burger.

I also like the idea of the burger served with delicious homemade potato chips and a choice of cole slaw or baked beans. Although fries are available and fantastic at the Boston Burger Company, the chips and cole slaw or baked beans are, collectively, more healthy (with the slaw and beans leading the way).

For me, burgers just haven't tasted like burgers the past several times at other restaurants -- the result, probably, of all those places trying to outdo each other and forgetting about the customer.  It's the equivalent of a writer writing to impress himself instead of considering the audience first. The Boston Burger Company seems to author its burgers and other menu items with a priority on the customer. They serve a wide variety of specialty and build-your own burgers with creative touches (like the "Vermonster" with sautéed apples & red onion, bacon, maple mayo, sharp cheddar), and also specialize in amazing, over sized "Freak Frappes," as well as soups, salads, sandwiches, boneless wings and craft beer.

The excellent overall dining experience extends to all other facets of the restaurant with a comfortable, cozy dining and bar area, attentive and friendly service, good value for the money and a crack management team making sure everything runs smoothly. If one of those elements doesn't work, it can spoil a meal no matter how good the food. I found the Boston Burger Company meets all criteria of a good, solid restaurant, and not just coming across as another one-note burger place that gets people in and out quickly.

Boston Burger Company is a dining out goldmine for anyone in the Harvard Square area. Returning and first-time students to Harvard University should definitely take note of this amazing burger place -- and everyone else, for that matter!

Boston Burger Company is located at 1105 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA. Tel. 857-242-3605. Boston Burger Company also has locations at 37 Davis Square in Somerville, and 1100 Boylston St. in Boston. Also check out Boston Burger Company on Facebook!
