It's hard to get a good read on many modern day bookstores, but, fortunately, the Harvard Book Store in Cambridge, carries on the grand tradition of passionate and dedicated locally-owned book selling combined with a 21st century relevancy.

The Harvard Book Store indeed meets all the criteria for a great book store: new releases, popular and lesser-known contemporary and older used books,
digital books, myriad author events, superb customer service and early-to-late hours of operation. They also offer a books-on-demand service where customers can print paperback books from electronic files available online.  The store is bigger on the inside than what it looks like from Massachusetts Avenue -- the book selections run deep from the front of the store to back on the main and lower levels.

Following the tenets of a traditionally free-thinking Harvard Square culture, the Harvard Book Store (located adjacent to Harvard University) does not follow the paint-by-numbers, generic book store mentality that has often taken the uniqueness of out today's book shopping. This is a wonderful book store that follows it own path, and in the process hundreds of thousands of customers have faithfully followed this wonderful landmark since 1932.

They sure got it right, calling themselves "Harvard Square's Independent Bookstore"!

Harvard Book Store is located at 1256 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA.  Tel. 617-661-1515. Also be sure to follow the Harvard Book Store Facebook fan page for updates!
