Howard's Drive-in in West Brookfield, Mass., takes the basic order-at-the-window ice cream and comfort food roadside stand concept, and brings it to the next level.

Not content with serving greasy fried food and ice cream at increasingly outrageous prices, Howard's pays respect to the customer's love of great food and value. What that means is a kid's size dish of ice cream that is the size of a large at many other places but at rock bottom prices. We couldn't imagine the size of a small or large ice cream, as we are perfectly content sticking with the kid's portion -- quite noteworthy, given our love for an occasionally ample amount of ice cream. On the comfort food side the menu is varied, specializing in chicken (the BBQ is great!), steak and seafood. Popular, very well prepared dishes are the barbecue chicken dinners (only $7.25!), rib eye steak plate with onions and peppers, lobster roll, fried clam plate, double cheeseburgers, "kraut" dogs and the gargantuan "Captain's" Fisherman Platter -- clams, scallops, shrimp, haddock, fries and cole slaw! Our favorite is the lobster roll, a half-pound of real lobster at an amazing $13.50, and a really tasty New England clam chowder, loaded with clams. On the ice cream side, the "Graham Central Station" shines with its graham, chocolate and vanilla taste. Whether food or ice cream, everything we've tasted goes beyond the typical, thoughtless, frozen food-quality of some of its competitors. The quality of the offerings at Howard's have more of a fresh, full-bodied taste. Maybe that's why they have been in business for more than 40 years.

The country fresh air, families dining together at the picnic groves, the bright yellow lights illuminating the walk-up order windows at night, and the aromas of fried foods and barbecue chicken further lend a special quality to a leisurely summer, fall or spring day. Call it a love for the simple things in life, with simple foods and prices to validate timeless staple of roadside America.
