For a brief moment, the Willett Pond area in Walpole, Mass.
-- with its pristine, scenic bodies of water -- seems like a
perfect scene from the best parts of rural New Hampshire or Vermont.
You forget that it's suburban Boston Mass., as the peaceful
waters, the relative isolation, the noticeable upgrade in air quality
and the absence of rapid suburban growth offer an oasis to those in
search of special, unspoiled places. The waters seem to have a
different personality every day, but the most impressive scenes usually
take place in October and November when the sun's lower angle provides
some truly amazing fall sunsets (as pictured here). In addition, the
occasional rainbow (this one below taken in the spring) creates memorable, inspirational magic...

Natural settings are a vital constituent of things that matter most in
our lives, and those special places are often right at our own suburban
doorsteps, whether we know it or not. These pictures provide clear
proof that some of the greatest local scenery are
not solely reserved for New England vacation destinations.
