England travel article with your friends...
Every time I visit Peaceful Meadows Ice Cream in Whitman,
Massachusetts, the cold treats warm my heart unlike any other ice cream
stand.
While Peaceful Meadows clearly serves some of the most delicious,
creamy, farm-fresh, homemade ice cream I have tasted in New England,
the overall experience goes beyond just having a great cone, sundae,
frappe, shake, or ice cream soda. First, Peaceful Meadows delivers on
its pastoral name with pleasing farm fields. What other way to better
enjoy an ice cream stand than leisurely eating some ice cream by the
farm and its scenery? Despite commercial and industrial growth on this
stretch of Route 18, Peaceful Meadows seems wonderfully stuck in time
-- like the last great hope of rural America on this road.
The ice cream stand indeed feels like something out of the 1960s, which
makes sense since Peaceful Meadows ice cream dates back to 1962.
There's something so wholesome and nostalgic about Peaceful Meadows
that stands out more than other ice cream places with similar rural
settings and histories. I think it has to do with the people of
this area -- that is, so many of the families in the Whitman, East
Bridgewater, West Bridgewater and Abington area seem to be so laid-back
and friendly and holding onto old-fashioned neighbor values. Everyone
seems to know each other here. You hear more conversations going on,
and the locals seem more focused on getting some good ice cream and the
nice surroundings rather than smartphones, social media and other
modern day obstructions to enjoying the moment. That sentiment is
also expressed in the ownership and well-chosen staff as it is a
friendly group, as well as quite efficient -- even when the crowds line
up on the hottest summer nights.
What a lovely place, only made better by the presence of an American
food icon in the form of ice cream.
What are some of our favorite ice cream flavors? I'd say go with the
black raspberry, peppermint patti (peppermint ice cream with tiny
candies and a hint of chocolate), pistachio, strawberry and the monthly
specials like peach in July, blueberry cheesecake in August, apple
strudel in September and pumpkin in October. The Mud Sundae is a sweet
gem with coffee ice cream topped with crushed Oreos, hot fudge and
whipped cream. While on the subject of coffee, the coffee frappe is a
favorite in my family.

Another great thing about Peaceful Meadows is that it's open year-round
-- not a common business practice amongst the predominantly seasonal
ice cream stands in New England. The ice cream tastes just as great in
February! Peaceful Meadows also features a dairy store that sells
locally bottled milk, eggs, bacon, maple syrup and homemade baked goods.
Peaceful Meadows also has locations in Middleboro and Plymouth,
Massachusetts. They are equally phenomenal. The Plymouth location
resides in the heart of the beautiful, fun waterfront district and the
Middleboro spot is ideal when on the road to or from Cape Cod as it is
right off Route 495.
I usually don't make ice cream recommendations to friends as each
person has different tastes and preferences, but Peaceful Meadows in
Whitman is an exception. There's no doubt in my mind the ice cream will
appeal to virtually everyone and the atmosphere is just timeless and
priceless. It's a beautiful place to be in the summer -- or any other
time of the year, for that matter.
