Commonwealth BBQ in Wrentham, Massachusetts Makes the Cut as a
Tremendous Barbecue Joint

The Boston area offers a surprisingly good number of barbecue
joints. If grilled on which one is best, however, I would choose
Commonwealth BBQ in Wrentham, Massachusetts.
This friendly, unpretentious year-round outdoor drive-in stand does an
amazing job with its barbecued meats -- pit smoked
over hard woods for many hours. The aromas, alone, are worth the
visit, and the authentic south-of-the-Mason Dixon-Line meals easily
confirm what is expected -- this is one tremendous barbecue joint.
What would I recommend? For an appetizer, go with the big, succulent jumbo
wings -- made in the smoker and then fried to a golden hue. I like the
"smoke-only" flavor, but you can order several versions including
barbecue, Buffalo, or hot cranberry habanero. Served with carrots and
Bleu or ranch dip, this could be a meal in itself. The chili is also a
standout with its flavorful smoked meats, multiple seasonings and
shredded cheese topping. It has a kick and overall flavor often missing
in those so-called "award-winning chilis" that never seem to fully deliver on
their promise at some other local places.
You really can't go wrong with any of the rib dinners, as well as platters offering a
base of pulled pork, sliced beef brisket, pulled or half chicken,
boneless chicken breast or savory sausage. The "Wampum Sampler"
might be the best bargain, as well as a tour de force of what is great
here. This dish features more than five pounds of food! The pork,
brisket, sausage, half rack of St. Louis ribs, fries, sweet fries,
beans, cole slaw, and cornbread is the stuff that barbecue fans like me
dream about -- phenomenal!
When in the mood for "just" a large portion of barbecue food as opposed
to a gargantuan one, I opt for the barbecue pulled pork platter with "cowboy" beans, collard greens and cornbread

The art and science of authentic slow barbecue cooking seems largely
reserved for southern and midwestern United States BBQ joints, but
Commonwealth BBQ takes some geographical liberties to bring that taste
to the Boston area (it's about an hour's drive southwest of Boston). Add some picnic tables, a pleasant semi-rural
suburban location and a colorful, welcoming, nostalgic drive-in vibe,
and summer eating quickly becomes that much better. Or fall, winter and
spring dining experiences, for that matter! This is simply one great
roadside shack.
