As a sister dining spot of the landmark Deluxe Town Diner in neighboring Watertown, Mass., the Deluxe Station Diner opened on Jan. 7, 2011. The Deluxe Station Diner offers the same mix of delicious comfort food and occasional upscale selections along with friendly service, but within a more spacious setting that includes a full bar (good beer selection) and dining room (along with "hallway" seats, as well as a much smaller dining room). The high vaulted ceilings, dark wood paneling and train tresses-accented walls, and faux metal clock and tower sculptures create a unique setting that respectfully holds onto the site’s past while creating a wonderful scene for dining out. The look and layout admitedly isn’t that of a true diner, but the food selection certainly carries on the dining tradition with pancakes, hash and eggs, omelets, club sandwiches, chicken pot pie, broasted half chicken, meatloaf and roast turkey dinners, and homemade pies and cakes. On the “un-diner” side, you’ll find selections like sweet potato pancakes, apple curry turkey burger, tofu and vegetable stir fry, Asian noodle and chicken salad, eggplant French fries, soy shakes, and exotic teas from all over the world. We sampled a delicious beef and root vegetable stew in a sourdough bread bowl, along with a one-of-a-kind spinach salad with goat cheese and bits of real bacon in a balsamic dressing. Absolutely fabulous! For dessert, the chocolate cake and Boston cream pie were of generous portions and clearly made from fresh ingredients -- none of that generic, could-have-been-from-the-supermarket taste. Be sure to try, also, the cosmo deluxe cupcakes -- a staple at the Deluxe Town Diner -- with lots of color and texture and, more importantly, the perfect blend of icing and sweetness. We’ll be back. The Deluxe Town Diner food in Watertown has always been beyond satisfying and with the opening of the Deluxe Station Diner, we now have a place with a little more elbow room, wonderful historical ambiance, and for those that like to drink, a handsome bar setting.
