If you're looking for a slice of 1950s summer night nostalgia, then head on down to the car hop, drive-in joys of the seasonal George's Surf and Turf in Mendon, MA.
What was supposed to be a relic of the past -- that is, a drive-in with car hops -- brings in droves of people, virtually every night (and during the day, for that matter) in the warm weather season. After all, some culinary, comfort food traditions are timeless and ultimately tasty: lobster rolls, fried clam plates, fried haddock sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken fingers, onion rings, French fries, a good cup of New England clam chowder, clam cakes, lime rickeys, root beer floats and hard and soft serve ice cream. George's has a terrific reputation for turning out high quality versions of these popular foods, and we've encountered it first-hand during several visits.

Add picnic benches under a long canopy and umbrellas, play some oldies music, have a play area for the kids with a sand box and play house, and you've got a dining version of the all-inclusive family resort. The service is upbeat, pleasant and quite efficient, thus adding to the overall excellent, feel-good dining experience.

Whether being served in your car (M-F, 4-8 p.m., Sat.-Sun. 12-8 p.m., call ahead as times might change) or ordering at the walk-up window, George's Surf and Turf is one of those staples of summer -- a seasonal rite of passage, of sorts, into a revered time of year for us hardy, yet winter-weary New Englanders with a yearning for going back to a simpler time.
