Concord, NH, doesn't seem like a state capital. Coming out of our car on an October Saturday morning, a family of four smiled at us, drivers on both sides of the road stopped their cars to let us cross the street, and the typical urban noise levels of trucks, cars, blaring music, road repairs, crazy street people and the like were virtually non-existent. In our hour there, we heard no one swear and not one person we saw wore strange body piercings. For a moment, Concord seemed quieter than our small-town Massachusetts hometown. We enjoyed a moment of urban tranquility in front of the New Hampshire State House. This magnificent building was designed in 1814 in a Greek Revival style and features a huge shining golden dome, bull's eye window and golden eagle. The surrounding 2.6 acres of grounds are perfectly manicured with statues of Daniel Webster, General John Stark, John P. Hale, and Franklin Pierce. The surrounding historical buildings and the rest of Main St. create a nice place for a leisurely walk with brick sidewalks and many shops and restaurants. How different this state capitol is than the constant barrage of city elements in Boston, MA, or Hartford, CT. As the politics, no doubt, heat up inside the New Hampshire State House during a Downtown Concord, NH, election year, it sure was nice to have experienced a quiet respite from the political -- and urban madness -- that often disrupt our peace of mind. And here, we were right outside the state capital building in what is officially designated as a city and the state capitol! What a nice city Concord is, a place we plan to come back to explore! The top 10 things to do in Concord...

by Eric H.,

Take a 45-minute walk around peaceful, tranquil and scenic Walden Pond -- the former home of author Henry David Thoreau. It's a great swimming place in the summer and a wonderful place to reflect in the fall, winter and spring.

Shop local at the many downtown Concord shops, ranging from boutiques to specialty food shops.

Experience Colonial charm with a lunch or dinner at the Colonial Inn in the heart of downtown Concord.

Take in a bit of American history at the Old North Bridge -- where local Minutemen experienced its first American Revolutionary War victory by forcing the British to retreat back to Boston on April 19, 1775. Today the Old North Bridge area seems more like a peaceful walker's oasis with the placid Concord River, a quiet country path leading to "secret gardens" and the stately visitor center known as the Buttrick Mansion.

Visit Verrill Farm for fresh produce and specialty products, a sweet smell in the air and beautiful farm views.

Sample one of the region's best pizzas at New London Pizza at Depot near downtown Concord.

Canoe down the scenic Concord River.

Trek to neighboring Carlisle for a relaxing and tasty visit to the seasonal Kimball Farm ice cream stand.

Enjoy the historic town common feel of Monument Square in downtown Concord.

Experience a highly-sophisticated but oh-so-fun children's museum at the Discovery Museum in nearby Acton.
