The Intervale Farm Pancake House in Henniker, N.H., is "Flat" Out Great! ![]() ![]() Article and photos by Eric H. It wasn't through a dining review web site, GPS or any other modern technology that offers instant information on restaurants in a given area. As seemingly one of the last of those living in the suburban Boston area without GPS or car WiFi, we clearly didn't have those convenient options. Instead, my wife, Joan, rolled down the window on our 2001 Mazda MPV mini van and asked a local for suggestions on where to find a dining spot with good breakfasts. The older, tatooed man, out for a walk, told us without hesitation to head on over to the Intervale Farm Pancake House near the Pat's Peak ski area. He said with wethered enthusiasm, "That's where everyone goes for breakfast," while going on to tell us why. We thanked him, rolled up the window, and started to drive toward the Intervale. The tattooed man waved us down, however, so we backed up the car and rolled down the window again. He started telling us more about the restaurant! Appreciating this sincerity that you just can't get through modern technology (or for that matter, living in the Boston area), we put our hunger buttons on hold to hear more about the Intervale. Soon, we drove off, feeling good about chatting with this friendly "local" and eagerly awaiting a big, hearty New Hampshire breakfast. We noticed several military veteran license plates and stickers on cars parked at the Intervale. Families, older couples and a few lumberjack types were walking in or out of the restaurant, located at the base of Pat's Peak. With the fresh air, clouds temporarily embedded in the mountains, lush, green surrounding fields, hills and mountains and the "you could hear a pin drop" sound of plates being stacked in the Intervale kitchen, we felt satiated without even starting breakfast. Here at the Intervale, we found New Hampshire dining heaven -- a post and beam log style home with an inviting rustic dining room featuring an a-frame ceiling, wooden floors, walls and tables, a strong smell of coffee, maple syrup made by the Intervale placed at every table, and a collective look of content from customers from all walks of life dining on pancakes, waffles, French toast, omelettes and the "Hungry Man" special. The "Hungry Man" breakfast includes three eggs, two pancakes, one slice of bacon, one link of sausage, home fries and one piece of toast. An efficient, friendly young waitress quickly took our order and within a few minutes, we joined the happy crowd by feasting on some delicious chocolate chip pancakes and an omelette with tomato, mushroom and cheddar cheese. We left the Intervale Farm Pancake House with full bellies and wallets -- the latter, given the reasonable prices. Nice to know, too, that Intervale has an ice cream stand on the premises! While we realize that good breakfast places, in general, are pretty much the same in food quality (come on, toast, pancakes, bacon and omelets are hard to screw up!), we would make the hour and forty five minute trip from Boston to the Intervale Farm Pancake House. Why? Because the rustic feeling, rural New Hampshire charm and the presence of a close-knit Henniker community going out to breakfast over some very good food lends an overall feeling that just makes you feel good all over. And it's a great way to start the day in a beautiful New England town. Just ask the locals! Intervale Farm Pancake House Route 114 at Flanders Rd. Henniker, NH Tel. (603) (603) 428-7196
