New England dining >>> Best diners in New England, Northeast United States The Memphis Roadhouse brings south of the Mason Dixon line barbecue cuisine to South Attleboro, Mass. (CLOSED) Article and photo by Eric H. The Memphis Roadhouse is so good that it won a "Best of Rhode Island" award for barbecue food. That's quite impressive considering the Memphis Roadhouse is located in Massachusetts. Specializing in mouthwatering ribs, steaks and chicken, the Memphis Roadhouse in South Attleboro, Mass. (10 minutes north of Providence, R.I.), might just be the best barbecue restaurant in the south -- southern New England, that is. Faithfully sticking to traditional barbecue cooking over a hickory-smoked barbecue pit, the smoky flavors of their barbecue chicken, Memphis Roadhouse ribs, mid-western steaks hand cut in theirown butcher shop, Texas beef brisket and other succulent offerings would make anyone from south of the Mason-Dixon line proud. On a recent visit, we sampled some amazing barbecue chicken, pulled pork, tasty beans, homemade cornbread and a giant Caesar salad resulting in one of the best meals we've experienced in a long time. The atmosphere in this large restaurant is appealing, also, with rocking chairs on a large outside farmer's porch and inside, red gingham table coverings, party lights, neon lights, tin torpedo lamps, a high and lonesome bar separated from the dining room, blues collectibles and real blues music in the background. They even have an ice cream stand in the back of the restaurant! The Memphis Roadhouse is certainly not for faithful dieters or vegetarians, but for those who like to eat barbecue food and lots of it, the Memphis Roadhouse delivers the southern goods in its Yankee location. The Memphis Roadhouse, 383 Washington St.,, Route 1, South Attleboro, Mass. Tel. (508) 761-5700.
