The Star Drive-In in Taunton, Massachusetts earns five-star
status as a wonderful comfort foods destination.
With a classic 1950s drive-in look and a menu featuring American
favorites like burgers, dogs, fried seafood and ice cream, the Star
Drive-In might come across as a piece of heartwarming dining nostalgia,
but it also transcends that genre with some nice 21st century touches.
The burgers are fresh, not frozen, seafood brought in from a local
vendor, and ice cream from Maine-based Gifford's Ice Cream. The kids working here
are genuinely pleasant and work with efficiency, while owner Erika
Madden serves as a great role model spending countless hours in the
kitchen and overall restaurant operation with a high work ethic beyond
reproach. With many years in the corporate world, Erika has brought
corporate precision and vision to the restaurant while
maintaining the wonderful, old-fashioned feel. Admittedly, the Star
Drive-In needed a facelift in all aspects and Madden came in as the
restaurant surgeon to complete a successful operation.
Parents will love the low prices and family-friendly atmosphere, kids
the yummy foods and the carousel out front, and everyone the vintage
car shows, as well as movies played on a big projector outside from May
to September. Big screen televisions add entertainment inside, while
picnic tables on the extensive grounds provide an ever better show in
the form of Mother Nature.
While the burgers, fried clams, fish and chips, hot dogs and ice cream
remain most popular items, keep in mind the lobster and clam cakes,
lobster rolls, and kale soup. For dessert, you can't go wrong with the
many hard and soft serve flavors as well as the latest concoction: The
fried dough sundae with a choice of three scoops and an option of hot
fudge, caramel or peanut butter topping, whipped cream and cherry. This
masterpiece is served on fresh dough, and dredged with cinnamon, butter
and powdered sugar.
It's so nice to relive the "good, old days" at a place like the
Star-Drive-In, but even nicer to see such pride of ownership and a
commitment to fresh food. Sure, the Star Drive-In comes across as a
relic of the past, but it is also a restaurant of the future -- that
is, as a local landmark that might very well have its best days now and
in the future.
