Sweetheart Inn Restaurant and Tavern Brings Pure New England Dining to Methuen, Mass.

The Sweetheart Inn Restaurant and Tavern is just that -- a place to fall in love with at first sight...and taste.

This Methuen, Mass., restaurant, tucked away in a remote, residential neighborhood, features familiar steak, chicken and seafood dishes in a beautiful, restored 1776 yellow Colonial home. White Christmas lights in the charming, post-and-beam, carpeted dining room, and a cozy little bar (in a related story, the restaurant was once used as a general location to distill alcohol!) lend a comfortable and familiar feel when restaurants looked like restaurants, and food selections didn't have to get too fancy to be enjoyed by all ages. This classic New England "inn" restaurant also features private function rooms and a summer outdoor barbecue pit with bocce ball and horseshoe courts.

The restaurant was renovated in 2003 and 2005, so be assured that this former residential home is not one of those charming places that also happens to be falling apart. On the contrary, this is one beautiful, historic restaurant that will lovingly tug at your New England heart.

The Sweetheart Inn taps into our taste bud's all-time favorite dishes like lobster pie, chicken pie, roast turkey dinner, prime rib, baked haddock, baked stuff shrimp, chicken parmesan, fried chicken in a basket and sirloin tips. Dinners for two help with the budget, while a nice variety of salads provides your requisite greens. The drink list includes a variety of wines and beers, as well as specialty coffees and martinis. Desserts feature grapenut custard pudding, apple crumb pie, straberry shortcake, ice cream sundaes and bread pudding.  You might never get to try the desserts, given the ample dinner portions!

On our first visit, we enjoyed a tasty clam chowder with a mild but pleasant broth and enough clams to seemingly create a shortage at the nearby ocean. The Veal Oscar with fresh lobster meat, asparagus and hollandaise sauce
and Veal Marsala satisfied our hearty appetites that night and scored high points for well prepared dishes that ranked up there with the best we've experienced. Tenderness is not always synonymous with restaurant veal, but the Sweetheart Inn remedied that issue quite well!

Our young waitress was personable, attentive and knowledgeable -- certainly one of the better restaurant service experiences we had in a long time.

What a wonderful place -- great name, excellent food and service, and an atmosphere that is pure New England. We'll be back to this "Sweetheart" of a restaurant!
