Portland
is a fascinating mix of big city and small town flavor.
Beautifully situated on Casco Bay, Portland offers first-class dining,
hotels, museums, and sporting events like any other city, but the
overall laid back feeling of a friendly "Hi, how are you today?"
community with a population of only 64,0000 makes one realize that
Portland is ultimately a series of small, historic neighborhoods and
districts. The old brick, sea port business district look of
revitalized Old Port Exchange will thrill visitors with its small,
locally-owned, unique shops and cozy cafes. The adjacent waterfront is
a pleasant work in progress featuring some wonderful seafood
restaurants like Demillo's Floating Restaurant, an interesting dining
choice (known for great seafood) elegantly housed in a huge ship on the
water.
The
end of the waterfront brings you to a two-mile oasis called the Eastern
Promenade that leads to Easter End Beach and incredible views,
including the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Portland is also a city
ideal for the outdoor travel enthusiasts, in close proximity to
boating, kayaking, skiing, golfing, mountain climbing, biking and more.
Casco Bay, with its many islands, seems like a particularly good spot
to sail. Fort William Park, 10 minutes from downtown Portland in Cape
Elizabeth, is the site of Portland Head Light, one of the most
photographed lighthouses in the country. Fort William Park offers
incredibleviews of the rugged Maine coast and its expansive grounds are
ideal for walking, kite flying or just having a picnic.
Portland
is pleasantly walkable, memorable and distinct, not your typical cookie
cutter city, by any means. It is a city is big enough to act like a
complete metropolis but laid-back enough to retain its small-town
charm, making it a worthy choice for a New England coastal vacation.
Portland
Pros:
Big city amenities with small town flavor, scenic coastal location,
high concentration of great restaurants, hotels range from
family-oriented to luxurious.
Portland
Cons: Some areas still in need of
revitalization. Some cookie cutter city elements moving in to this
still unique city.
