Maine
is just
plain fun. Aptly named "Vacationland," Maine's seacoast is full of
lobster dinners, "chowda," rocky coast, seaside hotels with true Down
East character, some beautiful stretches of sandy beach and always
chilly water. Inland, there are the scenic mountain and lake regions of
Sebago, Rangeley as well as myriad small town charm to call your own on
a vacation.
There's
no major city in Maine, and
that's a good thing. Portland
has a population of just over 60,000. At
times, it seems like a city with some tall buildings and first class
museums, but walk the cobblestone and brick streets, shop the small,
charming
quaint inns and bed and breakfasts,
locally-owned stores, and you'll feel like your in a small town. The
combination just calls for a vacation, as some truly spectacular
restaurants and hotels are juxtaposed with "green areas," and a
leisurely pace rarely found in a city. People actually stop to say
"hello." -- and there not even looking for a handout!
Our
favorite coastal areas include
Acadia
National Park for its stunning mountain and ocean scenery; York
for its fun beach scene and family-oriented atmosphere; and Boothbay
Harbor, a classic Down East coastal town if there ever was
one.
Many inns, hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts come with
splendid ocean views, a prime example being the
Maine is our
personal favorite New England state. There's a special feeling in the
air that's hard to put into words. It almost seems like every step has
a purpose when discovering all that Maine has to offer. It's friendly,
full or personality and personalities, and the southern coastal towns
of the aforementioned York,
Ogunquit,
Kennebunkport,
Wells and Old
Orchard Beach offer one
fun activity after another -- and plenty of that great Maine lobster
and "chowda!
