modern, Providence, RI is a fascinating city to tour, given its
appealingly diverse neighborhoods. College Hill is perhaps the most
beautiful section with its Brown University Ivy League, tree-lined
streets, quaint neighborhoods with interesting locally-owned shops and
restaurants, and many well-maintained Colonial homes. Benefit Street is
a prime example of this historical preservation with about a mile of
Colonial homes. While at College Hill, be sure to stroll through
Prospect Terrace Park where you'll find some spectacular panoramic
views of Providence. Federal Hill is Italian-flavored with some amazing
bakeries (especially Scialo Brothers Bakery, around
since 1916), restaurants (Camille's is an upscale gem with
some delicious pasta dishes) and pizza places (try Sicilia's Pizzeria
at 181 Atwells Ave. for hand-tossed deep dish and thin crust pizzas). Providence
Place is the city's newest attraction, a spectacular
three-story shopping mall with more than 170 shops and great views of
the city. Near Providence Place is Waterplace Park, a 14-acre oasis in
the heart of the city featuring a one-acre pond (leading to three
rivers), a cobblestone promenade, an amphitheater with events and
entertainment, arched Venetian style bridges over the water and
gondolas and water taxis. Additionally Providence offers a growing arts
and culture scene and restaurants and new or renovated historic hotels
(check out the Providence
Biltmore) everywhere you look. Although some sections are
best avoided due to safety issues, Providence has made a remarkable
transformation over the past 15 years into one of
America's most impressive mid-sized cities.

takes about as long as Providence rush hour traffic to get your order,
but there's a reason: everything is fresh here, whether it's the
unparalleled thin crust or scrumptious thick Italian pizza. Located in
the interesting, colorful, Italian-flavored Federal Hill section of
Providence, Sicilia's stand out against some noteworthy
competition. This is authentic pizza in a no-frills, plain
atmosphere. It's worth the wait and quite possibly the best pizza we've
experienced in New England.
