New England vacation ideas
Visit the Quiet Corner of
Connecticut for your perfect romantic getaway
by Eric H., lifelong
New Englander
With little population, isolated
towns with big town commons and beautiful old homes, and few
stores, it may be difficult initially getting used to the northeastern
Connecticut's Quiet Corner. As you start to relax and unwind,
however, you start to put things in perspective: this is the
way New England used to look before rampant commercialism took
over our farms and open land.
The purity of this special area
will leave you with nothing to concentrate on except the rural
scenes and ultimately, yourselves. Northeast Connecticut's Quiet
Corner is a wonderful place to reconnect with each other, the
big sky, farmland with gentle rolling hills, rivers and lakes.
It's a great place to pick apples in the fall, cross country
ski in the winter, take in the sweet smell of flowers and fresh
air in the spring and lake swimming in the summer.
While the Quiet Corner is indeed
quiet, it's not quite a mainland Gilligan's Island.
The area has some excellent hotels and inns, restaurants and
locals farm stands, arts and crafts shops, book stores and a
few gift shops along the way. Putnam, a small town that serves
as the commercial hub of the Quiet Corner, has one of the highest
concentrations of antique shops in New England.
One of our favorite activities
is to take a country drive along Route 169 from Woodstock to
Canterbury, CT, featuring over 200 pre-1855 homes along with
farms, historic churches and classic Connecticut village green
centers. The gentle rolling hills and historic landmarks of this
classic New England byway make Route 169 one of the most beautiful
rural drives in New England.
For lodging, we love the 1816
Inn at Woodstock Hill in Woodstock,
CT,featuring 22 old-world rooms within one of the most beautiful
Federal/Georgian style mansions you'll ever find. It is quite
simply, our favorite, "quaint" place to stay in New
England. Read our review here.
Our top dining choice is the
Vanilla Bean Cafe in Pomfret,
a casual dining spot located in a restored 1840s farmhouse. It's
great for breakfast, lunch and dinner with freshly-made choice,
and the option to dine outside adjacent to a classic New England
town common in the warmer weather. The quaint farmhouse with
dim lighting at night is the perfect place for conversation.
The Vanilla Bean Cafe also offers top-of-the-line folk music
performances at night that has included Lori McKenna and Garnet
Rogers. The cozy post-and-beam atmosphere makes us want to say
"We'll be back tomorrow! (we live 60 miles away)!"
One of our faithful readers reports
a great place to have ice cream in the Quiet Corner. It's called
We-Li-Kit Farm (728 Hampton Rd. , Route 97), Abington, CT. Our
reader says the ice cream "can't get fresher than this,
they make the ice cream from their own cows. The ice cream is
excellent. They make home-make waffle cones right in front of
you. The atmosphere is delightful... outdoor dairy farm."
Another great discovery is Stoggy
Hollow in Woodstock Valley, CT (492 Eastford Rd.(Rt.198),
Woodstock Valley, Ct. 06282. Tel. 860-974-2889). Tiny
Woodstock Valley may be the epicenter of northeast Connecticut's
"Quiet Corner," a place that makes "Green Acres"
look like Times Square. Pies, cakes and other delicious baked
goods occupy the charming country store side of this ancient
1836 wooden building while hearty breakfast, lunch and dinner
selections fulfill the biggest appetites on the restaurant side.
The pulled pork is particularly good, but you can't go wrong
with the fresh oversized sandwiches and great pancakes. What
puts Stoggy Hollow over the edge on the quality restaurant meter
is the life that it brings to the community in the most traditional
sense -- a place where people congregate to converse, buy the
Sunday paper, and enjoy the homemade foods. Stoggy Hollow may
be hard to find, but ultimately hard to beat when it comes down
to good old country cooking, located in the proverbial "middle
of nowhere."
Rural shopping doesn't get much
better than the Christmas
Barn (Route 169 Woodtsock). Twelve rustic rooms with "lots
of great stuff." There's candles, linens, books, toys. cards,
candies, and loads of Christmas-themed items. The ancient barn
held up by beams houses virtually thousands of items -- with
at least one that you're sure to buy. Like everything else in
the area, the Christmas Barn is within full view of farm animals
and some lovely countryside. Whispering
Hill Farm (Rt. 169 (860) 960-0162), a rug hooking supplier
in Woodstock, is located on a country hill with nice country
views. This inviting farmhouse offers wool, rug hooks, patterns,
books, fabric backings, frames and cutters in yet another relaxing
rural, Quiet Corner setting.
The Quiet Corner of Connecticut
has everything a vacationer could ever ask for without being
overwhelming. Whether it's scenery, stores, dining or lodging,
it's all here -- except it's easier to find the open land than
the commercial businesses. It's quite the opposite of a typical
vacation, but ultimately more rewarding...and relaxing.
